when we think about college, we remember a place where we grow up, where we emancipate ourselfs, and become independent.
However, when the college student enters in first year, he's juste leaving primary school and a part of him always needs to feel protected.
The school needs to be the place where the child will be able to stand on his own two feet, knowing he is in a safe place.
In this college, the ground rises itself to receive the shared spaces. It express this notion of protection, like a maternal wrap.
In the playground and the common spaces, the views are opening on the college only. In this way, the college student feels like he belongs to it.
Moreover, this base become the place where all the people and elements join themselves : teachers, supervisors, administration people and students. The rooms face each other across this big playground. The entrance of the college directely leads to the playground, at the top of the stairs.
The base seems to disapear thanks to the vegetated banks bordering the streets.
The massive structure is made with concrete beams, leaning on the buttresses. The facade is almost entirely made of glass to bring light in thoses interred spaces. Some skylights are disposed at the back of the rooms to magnify the concrete structure.
Only one element sands out of the basis : the documentation center. This way, it can be shared with the city and become a small library. The center has its own forecourt to welcome the inhabitants on the weekend.
But in this project, the basis only exists to sustain the long classrooms building.
All the classrooms are facing the long view on Ivry-sur-Seine.
This time, the college student are connecting with the city, the distance, the future.
The classrooms building crosses the playground creating a covered space.
This building contrast ith the organic and massive basis. Made of metal and glass, it dialogues with the sky. It almost become inmaterial because of the micro-perforated metal surface on it.
