The Calanques National Park Entrance through a depollution and awerness center.

The point of this project is the reconversion of a former lead and acid factory. This factory is located in a district of Marseille city called "La Madrague de Montredon".

Since 1844, this factory was the economic center of the village, so when it closed in 2009, it has been a difficult moment for the workers and the inhabitants.

The ground of the factory is still a scar because of the soils pollution, (heavy metal and hydrocarbon) like many others factories in the same area (in the National Park).

The expensive decontamination elicits the architectural and programmatic reconverstion of the former factory.

The site is really isolated form Marseille and suffers of a lack of dynamism.

However, it has a large territory scale dimension with a high potential.

Indeed, the 10 ha of the former factory are directly connected to the Calanques National Park and are located at the starting point of the GR 98. A road leads to one of the biggest entrance of the Park : Callelongue.

The natural and identity heritage in this part of the National Park is seen as a real richness.

To give an answer to these matters, the project will be developted as an entrance in the National Park.

The idea is to take into account the principal constraint, the soils pollution, and transform it into the biggest asset of this reconversion.

A big part of the site (8 ha) will be decontaminated by the phytoremediation ecological techniques (decontamination with plants). The entrance will be done through a decontamination garden. A scientific unit will also be there to continue researches about phytoremediation on the calanques territory and beyond.

In this way, the National Park visitors are sensitized to the environment protection issues. Some rooms and spaces aim to cause an exchange between the inhabitants, the visitors, the scientists and the park managers.

Discovery, experiment and exchange are the key word of this project wich also propose other ways to practice the National Park and to adress the environment issues.
